The aim of Viral Contagion is to engage students in the world around them and support the appreciation that our ability to understand maths at a sophisticated level is of great benefit to individuals, local and national government and a whole range of public services.
Each lesson includes differentiated teaching material that encourages students to get 'in role' and think through the impact of infection rates changing in the event of such an outbreak.
The resource includes support for 4 separate lessons – but teachers are encouraged to modify the framework to suit their own teaching context.
Resources include:

- Contrived video news report scenarios that provide a stimulus for discussion and mathematical calculation.
- SCORM compliant interactive resources to embed within learning platforms
- Excel models
By using a learning platform this resource can be further enhanced through the use of online forums to hypothesise situations and make predictions that students can upload, debate and model outside of lesson time.
The overall aim of Viral Contagion is to bring the real world into the maths curriculum, perhaps inspiring teachers and students to create their own fictitious scenarios and then explore the maths within other problems that society has that impact on us all.
